Chiffres et nombres
« Hundred / thousand / million/ billion » sont invariables s’ils sont précédés d’un chiffre.
Par exemple : « The British government has vowed to spend an extra £20 billion a year on the N.H.S. »
« Des millions / des centaines » = « millions / hundreds ».
Par exemple : « Millions of people voted in favour of Brexit ».
Beaucoup / Peu
Beaucoup = « many + dénombrable (pluriel) / much + indénombrable (singulier) ».
Par exemple : « Many jobs are at risk if the economy does not improve. ».
« Because of terrorism, there wasn’t much growth in the tourist industry for a couple of years. »
On peut employer « a lot of / lots of » + dénombrable ou indénombrable
Par exemple : « A lot of people will be made redundant if the factory closes down. » « A lot of money has been invested. »
Peu = « few + dénombrable / little + indénombrable. »
Par exemple : « Few people deny the benefits of spending less time on electronic devices ». « There has been little change in the distribution of income over the last decades. »
